The Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop brings literature to our state's correctional facilities by providing courses and establishing mentorships. Their courses include fiction writing, essay writing, poetry, spoken word, oral story telling, children’s literature, fantasy writing, and more. Classes vary in length and depth. Some workshops are 12 weeks long and others meet for one day. MPWW students are a diverse group of writers ranging from beginners who are writing for the first time to experienced writers who are already publishing. Red Bird has partnered with the MPWW to provide chapbooks and printing services for these classes and we feel this organization serves a very important role in our community.
MPWW has recently been awarded a grant to bring visiting writers to the prisons and they need to raise $10,000 in matching funds by November 12, 2015 in order to take full advantage of the grant. More information on the grant and related initiative can be found here.
