In Balsamroot, Curtis explores loss and the haunting power of grief. It is the breakdown and decay of nature as well as the new growth that comes after. It is forging meaning out of teeth and broken bones and the detritus of the natural world. It is a wandering through newfound absence until finding a place in the absence to build a home and decorate it with flowers. Balsamroot is an animal call in response to loss. A mournful song, reaching out for what has been lost, or for a listener who understands the song.
