The dilemma of cultural reality shapes The Still Birth Of Beauty, so that desire becomes the driving force which propels the reader between the covers. This is a space where Nabakov’s Lolita can attend therapy with her sister, loveable boozehounds populate the bar, European vacations become synonymous with regret, and masks are part of everyday living. Yet, desire rarely satisfies and often leaves “…only a deep space conceived, then aborted in orbit, beyond love’s last mooring.”
